We do not belong to a tribe of course not, yet we are to be confessional and respect and appreciate teachers that have gone before us (Ephesians 4:11). The early church gathered as believers with a common doctrinal confession this cannot be denied.

Although we would not agree with everything from a theologian, what we can appreciate regarding Kline is that he was an ardent defender of the doctrine of justification.

What complements this part of the video are statement that Keller made in regards to Kline and the active obedience of Christ which is no longer available.

This is a video I transcribed a few years ago, the video was removed or lost. No words were altered.

Keller was asked, what was one of his major influences and this is what he stated:

"Meredith Kline classes on Covenant…heard this basic idea, in (or the) covenant there are blessings and curses, if you obey the covenant you're blessed, if you disobey your cursed. Jesus Christ comes to earth as a human being becomes a servant, even though he is Lord, he becomes a servant fulfills the covenant—obeys the ten commandments, loves God with His soul, strength, and mind, and loves his neighbor as himself. So at the end of his life what does he get? What should he get? He deserves the blessing. He is the only human being whoever entered into a covenant with the Father and fulfilled it, He deserves the blessing, but instead of taking that blessing at the end of his life He puts his hands, head in a noose, and he takes what you and I deserve because we are covenant breakers, he takes the curse, so he earns the blessing of the covenant but instead takes our curse of the covenant so that when we believe in Him we get His blessing. It wasn’t until we were in that class and heard that, that we actually figured out what Justification was, it wasn’t just pardon, it wasn’t just now God has pardoned us and Kathy and I though basically what that meant was that God pardoned you and you had one more chance and maybe another chance, and another chance, and another chance to really live a good life. It wasn’t until we understood imputation though Kline was using Covenantal language, that you get the blessing which He (Christ) earned and He gets the curse that you earned that we never understood that, we heard the word imputation but the penny didn’t drop. Yeah we realized that we were earning our own salvation

Although I do not agree with everything from the late Timothy Keller, personally I appreciate him for his stance on the importance of the imputation of the active obedience of Christ to sinners. Amen.
