When you tell the credit bureaus to freeze your credit, any fraudulent or legitimate creditor will not be able to access your credit file to evaluate your creditworthiness.

If your personal information has been stolen, a credit or security freeze will prevent that fraudster from obtaining credit cards, car loans or mortgages in your name and will prevent or limit the damage from identity theft.

On the other hand, if you need to access your credit to finance a car, apply for a mortgage or obtain consumer credit, you will not be able to so unless you temporarily unfreeze your credit file.

Each of the three major credit bureaus allow you to freeze and unfreeze your credit online or over the phone. My experience, however, was that the online and telephone process for managing credit is somewhat hit or miss - sometimes it works and sometimes it does not.

This means that if you know that you will need access to credit, don’t wait until the last minute to unfreeze your credit.
