Gunung MaChincang straddles on the northwest portion of Pulau Langkawi. To get up to the peaks, one should take the cable cars from the base station at the Oriental Village. Return cable car ticket costs RM15 per adult with myKad. There is supposedly a 2-1/2-hour jungle track from the base to the mountain top, if you are keen on doing the hike.

If you are driving in Pulau Langkawi, the cable car station is located near Teluk Burau (or Burau Bay). There are ample signs that will guide you from Langkawi International Airport or Kuah town to Teluk Burau, from which you will need to look out for the sign into the Oriental Village.

The cable car operates from 1000 hrs daily until right before sundown.

Gunung Mat Chincang is not the highest mountain in Langkawi. Such accolade goes to its neighbouring Gunung Raya at 880m above sea level. Hence, one might be wondering of what importance does Gunung Mat Chincang have to rationalise the recent introduction of Langkawi Cable Car to its mountain top.

It should not take long for you to find the answer. From the base station, on a clear day of course, you will be amazed by its spectacular craggy peaks that can substitute the filming location of LOST in Hawaii (pardon me for being off-track, but I do love the TV show). The massive mountain range is estimated to be between 450-550 million years old consisting of metamorphosed rocks with unique ecological habitats for various specie of flora and fauna. At such age, Gunung Mat Chincang takes the centre piece in the recent attempt by the government for Pulau Langkawi to be accorded a UNESCO Geopark status.

At the base station, there is an information corner where a quick factsheet of Gunung Mat Chincang can be read prior to boarding into the cable car. Mainly on the history as well as the key items to look out for during the ascending journey and at the mountain top. My quick read gathered that the cable car goes up to Matahari Face, an almost 90-degree rock cliff where the first mountain station is located.

Here is a good tip to enjoy the mountain view in its full glory, although I cannot guarantee it is always working. Most places in Malaysia tends to enjoy cloudless blue skies right until before noon (again, this is not set in stone, only on case-by-case basis). I normally get my camera gears up by then. In this trip to the mountain top, I took one of the earliest cable car rides. Even then, the clouds had started to cover the otherwise deep blue skies. Nonetheless, I did get a stunning view of the mountain and the surrounding areas. Those who came later in the afternoon might be disappointed with the thick clouds and yes, rain as well!

There are two stations on the top. The second station is definitely not to be missed. The views from here are spectacular - to the south is the beautiful bay of Teluk Burau with Pantai Kok, Telaga Harbour as well as smaller islets off the coast of Pulau Langkawi, to the north is a section called Tanjung Chinchin where Datai Bay is located against the deep-blue Andaman Sea and Thailand's Ko Tarutao across the international waters, and to the east is the spinal stretch of Mat Chinchang Range with a number of jagged forest-covered peaks that will definitely put you in awe.

At the second station, please do not miss the jungle trail that leads down to the latest attraction called the Curved Suspension Bridge. The trail takes about 5-10 minutes on a clearly marked jungle path. You may also view the types of vegetation that thrive on the unforgiving rocky outcrops - there are mostly of small trees and shrubs that grow on shallow soil due to the rock shale structure further underneath, as well as the frequent strong winds and pervasive inclement weathers at the top.

On the facilities itself, the two mountain stations are almost identical. They both feature a number of vantage points aptly designed in a compass-like structure with 10-degree of separation between one point of each other. They probably do not warrant for any intensive orientation mapping for the visitors rather than for purely aesthetic reasons.
