The Satavahanas ruled over the Deccan for 400 years, and their principal contribution to Indian art was cave architecture. The Rashtrakuta dynasty, which followed them, ruled for almost 350 years and developed cave architecture further. They encouraged the establishment of Brahmanical cave temples, the most impressive being the monolithic shrine at Ellora, their capital. The Rashtrakutas were also known for building forts and dams. Their contribution to art is observed not only in Maharashtra but also in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. At our Online Talk #CavesAndCults, historian Dr Anita Rane-Kothare goes beyond Ellora to highlight the contribution of the Rashtrakutas to the art history of Maharashtra.

About the speaker:
Dr Anita Rane-Kothare is Associate Professor and Head of Department of Ancient Indian Culture at St Xavier’s College, Mumbai. She has done her PhD in ‘The Art of the Rashtrakutas’ in 2013. Her other research interests are archaeology (including cave architecture and petroglyphs) and women in Indian art. She has presented papers at national and international seminars, and is Vice-Chairman of the Museum Society of Mumbai and the President of the Bombay Local History Society.
