If you install raised garden beds, you must protect them from gophers and other burrowers. We have learned this firsthand after not adequately protecting some other beds - and the gophers have located them. Once in the beds, they are fairly difficult to control, even with various control measures.

Will standard poultry wire do the trick, or do you need something better?

We were tempted to use standard poultry wire from the home improvement or farm supply store. It was less expensive (about $37 for the same-sized roll versus $73 plus shipping!), but that was a vital clue as to why “chicken wire” is not a good choice for this application.

First, the hole spacing was too large—1”—easily large enough for a gopher to get through. Second, the galvanized coating was thin and single-coated. All said, this meant that the wire wouldn’t last that long with elements in the soil corroding it, and more importantly, it wouldn’t stop the gophers from getting through!

The Diggers® Root Guard is double galvanized. Before weaving, the wire strands are electroplate galvanized. Once woven, the netting is hot-dipped galvanized. The manufacturer states this process provides six to ten years of protection in harsh environments such as under lawns, raised beds, or flower beds.

There is a visual difference between the two wires. While they are both constructed from 20 gauge wire, the poultry netting is a bright silver from the sole electroplated galvanizing done before the weaving process. This is a thin coat of zinc galvanizing. It provides moderate protection against corrosion/rusting, but not good protection when the wire is buried under soil.

The Root Guard is duller, gray/silver, and a bit more “cobbly” in appearance. This is because it has been galvanized twice. The wire itself is electro-galvanized before weaving. After weaving, a second hot-dip galvanizing coats the entire structure with a thicker coating.

Another clue is the weight. A 4’ x 25’ roll of 1” poultry netting weighs slightly over 8 lbs. The Diggers® product, 4’ x 25’, ¾” holes, double galvanized, weighs 12 lbs. While the increased amount of wire accounts for much of the higher weight, the 48” x 25' roll has about 1.5 lbs of hot dip galvanizing.

Yes, the Diggers® Root Guard is much more expensive, but it is designed to do the job with the correct sized openings and is coated to last longer. In our opinion, Getting the right item to last longer is really the bargain!
