Ridolfo Ghirlandaio (Italian painter) - Vasari's Lives of the most excellent Painters, Sculptors and Architects

➡️ Ridolfo di Domenico Bigordi, better known as Ridolfo Ghirlandaio (1483-1561) was an Italian Renaissance painter active mainly in Florence. He was the son of Domenico Ghirlandaio. He was born in Florence. Since he was eleven years old when his father died, Ridolfo was brought up by his uncle Davide Ghirlandaio, also a painter. Vasari states that he received further training under Fra Bartolomeo. His works painted between 1504 and 1508 show a marked influence from Fra Bartolomeo and Raphael, with whom he was friends. Raphael asked Ridolfo to join him in Rome in 1508, but the Florentine painter stayed. In Florence, he became one of the most prominent painters of altarpieces, frescoes, and portraits, many of which survive.

➡️ Davide Ghirlandaio (1452-1525), also known as David Ghirlandaio and as Davide Bigordi, was an Italian painter and mosaicist, active in his native Florence.

➡️ Benedetto Ghirlandaio (1458-1497) was an Italian (Florentine) painter. From 1486 until 1493 he was active in France, where survives his only extant signed painting, an altarpiece of the Nativity at Nôtre-Dame in Aigueperse.

✏️ The Lives of Vasari:
The Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors and Architects (Le vite de' più eccellenti pittori, scultori, e architettori) is a series of artist biographies written by 16th-century Italian painter and architect Giorgio Vasari, which is considered "perhaps the most famous, and even today the most-read work of the older literature of art", "some of the Italian Renaissance's most influential writing on art" and "the first important book on art history". The title is often abridged to just the Vite or the Lives of Vasari. Vasari published the work in two editions with substantial differences between them; the first edition, two volumes, in 1550 and the second, three volumes, in 1568 (which is the one usually translated and referred to). One important change was the increased attention paid to Venetian art in the second edition, even though Vasari still was, and has ever since been, criticised for an excessive emphasis on the art of his native city of Florence.
