Описание к видео "Living Room Salons" #21 - Ruotao Mao

This Labor Day weekend salon is performed by our concertmaster Ruotao Mao. He selected the "Kaprys Polski" by the Polish composer and violinist Grażyna Bacewicz (1909-1969).

Bacewicz was born into a family of musicians, and took lessons early in life in piano, violin, and composition. She was admitted to the Warsaw Conservatory at age 14. After graduating, she moved to France to study briefly with the famed teacher Nadia Boulanger. She won the Wieniawski International Violin Competition in 1935, launching her soloist career. After the war, she accepted a position at the newly restructured National Conservatory, where she would educate future generations of Polish virtuosi and composers alike. These days, she is primarily known for her compositions, which include several violin concerti, four symphonies, and a number of solo violin works, including three unaccompanied "Caprices".

A Caprice (or "Capriccio") is typically a short, free-from piece. This popular encore work incorporates clear folk influences, especially as it matches the structure to a traditional dance called the 'Kujawiak', which typically begins with a slow introduction and then launches into a upbeat second section and a fiery conclusion. Ruotao adds "With all the concerts around the world being on halt, I find one way to motivate myself is to learn something new. Grażyna Bacewicz was a Polish violinist/composer whose violin pieces have been something I always wanted to explore. She wrote many fantastic short solo works for the violin. This one is called Polish Caprice, it starts with a melancholy introduction and turns into an uplifting Polish dance."
