💬 On a steamy Sunday evening in mid-July, I received a text from a friend asking, “how would you like to go see 30,000 paper lanterns at a festival tonight? The location was around 30 minutes from where I was staying in Central Tokyo, so without hesitation I replied, “of-course!”

He added, knowing my twin love for photography and Japanese street food, “Oh, and there’ll also be a few food stalls close by for you to nibble!” So with that, I packed my camera gear, put on some comfortable sneakers and off I went.

The summer festival is called Mitama Matsuri, and has been held annually on the grounds of Tokyo’s Yasukuni shrine since 1947. It also goes by its traditional name, Obon, which is a Japanese Buddhist custom honouring the spirits of one’s ancestors, celebrated for more than 500 years.

For me, the main pull factor was the visual component. Where else could I see 30,000 orange coloured lanterns lining a 500 meter stretch? Combine that with the beautiful yukatas and casual kimonos worn by visitors and locals alike, the festive vibe of the 300,000+ attendees and of course, the range of delicious street food stalls situated close by— and you have a pretty amazing festival!

A few noteworthy points, alcohol is not permitted on the grounds, only the range of refreshments served. Visitors to the festival can pre-order their own lantern to be lit up with the rest. At the time of this writing, the cost ¥12,000 ($120 USD) for a large lantern and ¥3,000 ($30 USD) for a small. Hope you enjoy the video!
