June 1, 2020: China’s Gilded Age
Why has China grown so fast for so long despite vast corruption? Will corruption lead to the CCP’s collapse? In “China’s Gilded Age: the Paradox of Economic Boom & Vast Corruption”, Yuen Yuen Ang challenges the assumption that all corruption impedes economic growth. By unbundling corruption into four distinct varieties, Ang demonstrates that the type of corruption that prevails in China – what she calls access money (elite exchanges of wealth and power) – has stimulated investment and growth but produces serious risks for the economy and political system.
