One day in Hagen! 🇩🇪

Hagen is the 41st-largest city in Germany. The municipality is located in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is located on the south eastern edge of the Ruhr area, 15 km south of Dortmund, where the rivers Lenne and Volme (met by the river Ennepe) meet the river Ruhr. As of 31 December 2010, the population was 188,529. The city is home to the FernUniversität Hagen (University of Hagen), which is the only state-funded distance education university in Germany. Counting 69,982 students (winter semester 2022/23), it is Germany's second-largest university.

What to see in one day in Hagen?

•The Hagen Theater was inaugurated as a municipal theater on October 5, 1911 and is located in the historic building in downtown Hagen. The theater receives around 180,000 visitors annually, and the programmatic focus is on musical theater.

•The Theaterplatz is a square located in the city of Hagen, Germany. It is located in the city center and takes its name from the historic Hagen theater, also called Theater Hagen. The square is a central point for the cultural and social life of the city, with green spaces, cafes, restaurants and shops nearby. The theater itself is an important architectural landmark and hosts plays, concerts and operas.

•The Karl Ernst Osthaus-Museum is an art museum in Hagen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The center of the museum is a building whose interior was designed by Henry van de Velde to house Karl Ernst Osthaus' art collection, open to the public as the Museum Folkwang. When Osthaus' heirs sold his art collection to the city of Essen, the city of Hagen gained possession of the empty museum building. For a time it served as offices for the local electric company.

•St. Marienkirche is a church located in Hagen, Germany. It is one of the oldest churches in the city and represents an important historical and cultural monument. The church of St. Marien was built in the 13th century in Romanesque style, but over the centuries it has undergone many modifications and expansions, subsequently also adopting Gothic and Baroque elements. The building was damaged during the Second World War, but was later restored and reopened for worship. St. Marien Church hosts regular religious services, but is also a popular tourist destination for visitors who wish to admire the historic architecture and artwork within the church. The interior of the church is decorated with frescoes, paintings and sculptures by local artists. If you visit Hagen, I recommend paying a visit to St. Marien Church to admire its beauty and discover the history behind it.

•The Johanniskirche is an Evangelical Lutheran church building in Hagen-Mitte on the market square at the Springe.
