As a first-year beekeeper, I’m feeling the pressure of deciding how to overwinter my three hives — and it’s not a one-size-fits-all decision. In this inspection (October 5, 2025), I’m collecting detailed data on each colony: how many frames of brood, bees, honey, and pollen each hive has. Do they have enough to survive winter? Or will I need to consolidate?

I’m also following up on my experiment using quilting batting squares as an integrated pest management method for small hive beetles (SHB). Did it actually help, or did it cause harm? Follow along as I dig into all three hives and start making some tough calls to set my bees up for a successful overwintering season.
