ইউরোপের ভৌগোলিকরা মনে করতেন আফ্রিকার উপকূল গিয়ে ঠেকেছে সরাসরি দক্ষিণ গোলার্ধে। এশিয়ায় তখন অটোমান তুর্কি, ইরানে সাফাবিদ, উত্তর-পশ্চিম ভারতে মুঘল, দক্ষিণ ভারতে বিজয়নগর এবং আরো পূর্ব দিকে চীনের মিং ও কুইং, জাভার মাতারাম ইত্যাদি প্রধান রাজশক্তিশক্তিগুলি কার্যকর ছিল। এশিয়ার দেশগুলির সঙ্গে তখন ইউরোপের বাণিজ্য চলত পারস্য উপসাগর হয়ে স্থলপথে অটোমান রাজ্যের মধ্যে দিয়ে ভূমধ্যসাগরের নানা প্রান্তে। এই বাণিজ্যপথে বহুকাল ধরে একচেটিয়া রাজত্ব ছিল আরব বণিকদের। ইউরোপের বাজারে তখন গোলমরিচ ও অন্যান্য মশলার দারুণ চাহিদা। ১৪৮৬ সালে বিখ্যাত পর্তুগিজ অভিযাত্রী বার্থেলোমিউ দিয়াজ আফ্রিকার পশ্চিম উপকূল ধরে প্রথম পৌঁছলেন আফ্রিকার দক্ষিণতম প্রান্ত ‘কেপ অফ গুড হোপ’। এর কিছুদিনের মধ্যেই ১৪৯২ সালে ভারতের সন্ধানে ঘুরতে ঘুরতে কলম্বাস আবিষ্কার করে ফেললেন আমেরিকা মহাদেশ। অবশেষে ১৪৯৭ সালে পর্তুগালের রাজা ম্যানুয়েলের নির্দেশে ভাস্কো-দা-গামার ভারতযাত্রা প্রস্তুতি শুরু হলো। ১৪৯৮ খ্রীষ্টাব্দের ২০শে মে তারিখে ভাস্কো-দা-গামার আর্মাডা ফ্লীট অবশেষে পশ্চিম ভারতের মালাবার উপকূলের কালিকটে পৌঁছল।

১৫১৭ সালে পর্তুগিজরা প্রথম বাঙলার সাথে বাণিজ্যিক সম্পর্ক স্থাপনের জন্য সচেষ্ট হয়। ১৫৮০ খ্রিস্টাব্দ মুঘল সম্রাট আকবরের ফর্মানের বলে পর্তুগিজরা হুগলীতে স্থাপন করে এক নগরী। পর্তুগিজরা তাদের বসতিকে বলত Porto Pequeno. অবশ্য এখন জায়গাটি ব্যান্ডেল নামেই পরিচিত। জায়গাটি ষোড়শ শতকের একটি প্রধান বাণিজ্যকেন্দ্র হয়ে ওঠে। এখানেই গড়ে তোলে বাংলার প্রথম গির্জা- ব্যান্ডেল চার্চ। পর্তুগীজদের বাংলায় আসার গল্প এই ভিডিওতে।

Finally, in 1497, under the orders of King Manuel of Portugal, Vasco da Gama's preparations for his voyage to India began. On May 20, 1498, Vasco da Gama's armada fleet finally reached Calicut on the Malabar coast of western India.

In 1517, the Portuguese first tried to establish commercial relations with Bengal. In 1580, on the orders of the Mughal Emperor Akbar, the Portuguese established a city in Hooghly. However, the place is now known as Bandel. The place became a major trading center in the 16th century. The first church of Bengal was built here - Bandel Church.
