Only one crop in the world is totally hand pollinated in cultivation~ Vanilla planifolia, the vanilla orchid. In the wild the orchid would be pollinated by the euglossine bee.

In 1841 a 12 year old slave boy, Edmond Albius worked out how to successfully and efficiently pollinate vanilla flowers. Albius's discovery made it possible to start to pollinate and harvest vanilla pods profitably in European colonies.
