What is a tundish and why does it matter? Let me explain.
In this clip from The Copper Connection Podcast, Chris Bailey breaks down one of the most important—but often misunderstood—components of unvented hot water systems: the tundish.
This little funnel-shaped fitting sits between the relief valves and the discharge pipe. It does two critical things:
✅ Provides a visible air gap to prevent backflow
✅ Gives you a visual warning when something's wrong
If you see water dripping from the tundish, the system is telling you there's a problem—maybe a failed expansion vessel, a faulty PRV, or high pressure in the system.
The relief valves (PRV and TPRV) are your last-resort safety devices. If pressure or temperature gets too high, they discharge water safely through the tundish and out to a visible termination point—usually outside near a drain.
Why visible? So you know immediately if the system is discharging.
This is essential knowledge for anyone studying T Levels, City & Guilds, NVQ plumbing, or working towards G3 qualification.
