This was the first of two dances that I performed at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. This was at the World Finals, which I qualified automatically for after I won an Overall Title and Trophy at the Regional Competition in Andover, MA in March of 2008.
I dubbed this dance "Obi-Won", because I am wearing a Japanese-style obi around my waist and I won a Special Award from the judges for my "Terrific Timing", as you can read about below...
Extremely difficult music to dance to, with the opening consisting of Temple Bells and gongs. I had a special counting system I devised to keep track of the timing for the different Bells and gongs, and to match up my movements to them. This timing system depended on me counting evenly and at the same rate each time--not easy to do when the adrenaline of the competition sets in!! I was sitting on the bench at 7:30am outside the venue, and like each time I performed this dance, I was not sure I'd be able to hit all the musical cues, but experience taught me that if I stay steady with the counting and not rush things, I would be okay. It was certainly an honor to be awarded a Special Award at the Adjudication Ceremony, for my "Terrific Timing".
I was the first entrant that day, performing at 8:00am. I had been in the hotel gym by 3:00am to warm up/do class to be ready to jump and turn. Between my performances at the Regional and World Final Competition, this dance won numerous awards, including a Platinum Award and was also a crowd favorite.
