During Joplin's early career, it had included many periods of moving in & out of towns, settling in various locations while touring with the Texas Medley Quartet & eventually on his own. Perhaps the most influential of places Joplin would settle is to be St. Louis, where he would meet one of his greatest friends throughout the rest of his career & lifetime: The local legend himself, Mr. Tom Turpin, the first published black Ragtime composer and proprietor of the famous Rosebud Café amongst other concerns.

Turpin's establishment bordered the red light district of St. Louis, and included a bar, a restaurant, an upstairs brothel, and an area for performers to strut their own stuff whenever they had pleased. Pianists from all around who would pass through St. Louis naturally gravitated towards the Rosebud to participate in cutting contests, or just to listen and absorb different styles of Ragtime playing to integrate with their own. Although Joplin was extremely unlikely to be found in a cutting contest, he did frequent the Rosebud and occasionally graced the room with his own compositions.

So just as he had a few years before with his Maple Leaf Rag, Joplin had honored this establishment with a special piece composed in its name with a honorable dedicated to its owner: The Rose-bud March, a carefully constructed 6/8 march full with just about as much liveliness that thrived within the Rosebud alone. Even the trio alone stands up against the best of John Sousa's 6/8 trios, allowing for great contrast to flow throughout. Had Joplin added an interlude after such trio, the work may have come out to be one of the most effective band marches of it's time.
