That presents an alternative approach of installing VSCode locally and using the remote development extension

Instructional video targeted at Belle II colllaboration members demonstrating some features of Visual Studio Code and how to set up the code-server version on the DESY National Analysis Facility (NAF) and connect with it from your own machine (e.g. notebook). This I regard as a superior workflow to just working via ssh in a terminal editor like bare vim or emacs.

code-server can't be easily installed on KEKCC yet because of a very outdated glibc version on SL6, but with the upgrade of KEKCC to CentOS7 that might change in the future. But if you're working with Bellle II data on the grid, there really is no need to work on KEKCC.

An alternative is to install a modern editor/IDE (e.g. pycharm) on your own machine and then just synchronize the files with KEKCC/NAF, but setting up this synchronization is usually more of a hassle and many people can't easily install basf2 on their own notebooks.

Install command from the video:
curl -fsSL https://code-server.dev/install.sh | sh -s -- --method standalone

The first time you install it, the web-interface will ask you for a password, which is automatically set on the NAF in the config file `~/.config/code-server/config.yaml`. You can edit this file to change the password and also e.g. change the port that the server is running on, since 8080 might be taken.


Further tips:

For my remote terminals I always use a terminal multiplexer, "screen" works fine, I use the more modern "tmux" which as you saw in the video. The advantage is that the server will keep running on the NAF even if I accidentally close the terminal on my notebook or the connection gets lost
