Requiem Fragments was conceived as a chamber cantata of sorts - a reimagining of the Requiem liturgy, primarily using texts from the book of Psalms, for solo voice, cello, and piano.
When I was first developing this work, Requiem Fragments was never for one specific person, truly a concert piece that could also be performed within some liturgical settings. But so much has changed since I had the idea many years ago, and even since I received the first email with music from Clint in January 2020. This piece is now commissioned and performed in memory of my father, Jonathan Sturges, who died on November 1, 2020. It was unexpected and not COVID-19 related, and our family was changed forever that day. He was a great man who touched many lives and will be missed by all who knew him.
In the summer of 2020, Clint was working on the Sanctus movement during the protests and marches surrounding racism throughout the US. The social, political, economic, and physical suffering of BIPOC in America was put on display, laid bare for the nation and world to see - and impossible to ignore when many were home during the COVID-19 lockdowns. This work is for those who have lost their lives because of systemic racism.
When I premiered this piece in March 2022, just over 6 million people worldwide had lost their lives to COVID-19 during the first 2 years of the pandemic - now a year later, it is now closer to 7 million. This persistent and brutal virus took far too many bright souls whose light is sorely missing now. This work is for them.
