One of my favorite games to play is Crusader Kings 2, which is basically a medieval politics simulator. You can play as a number of Viking and Rus’ characters - including the legendary Rurik - and one of the more interesting figures they have included, is Dyre ‘the Stranger’, as the ruler of Kainugarthr - Kiev. In this game, Dyre is presented as a Genius, whereas Rurik is simply “Quick” - a trait representing above average intellect. Certainly then, Dyre must’ve been an exceptional historical figure. But the fact is, next to nothing is actually known about him, and he may even have been entirely invented.
