On January 8th, 1945, at 2:30 in the afternoon, Technical Sergeant Russell Dunham found himself crouched in snow that reached his knees at the bottom of Hill 616, located near Kaisersburg, France. Above him, German machine gun fire sliced through the winter air while his platoon remained trapped and unable to advance. At 24 years of age, with three campaigns behind him, he had absolutely no intention of dying that day. The Germans had strategically positioned three MG42 machine guns within fortified timber emplacements scattered up the snow-blanketed hillside. These weapons possessed the capability to unleash 1,200 rounds every sixty seconds.
While advancing through the Alsace-Lorraine region, Dunham's platoon had inadvertently walked straight into what amounted to a death trap. From the summit of the hill, machine gun fire rained down relentlessly. Behind their position, artillery shells detonated with devastating effect. The sole remaining option was a direct assault up a forty-degree incline, straight into multiple overlapping fields of enemy fire. During that week alone, eleven soldiers from the second platoon had already lost their lives.
