Just 3 km from the CBD, South Melbourne has become an upmarket place to live and shop at. Many people come for South Melbourne market, but since it's closed today, this first taster will take us around the market and main strip, ending at the South Melbourne Town Hall.

We start at the South Melbourne tram line 🚋where the 97 runs. It was once a train line which led to Flinders St Station, but was converted to its present form in 1987. We then walk past South Melbourne market where on a market day, is an upmarket, hipstery place to get groceries, great coffee, pastries, great food and other things. We'll explore that in a future walk.

We then walk past many nice shops, such as Cottle on Coventry (8:07), which is a great place to buy ground coffee for the plunger or machine (🔗https://www.cottlecoffee.com.au), and Paperpoint (9:29), which is a heaven for stationary lovers with fountain pens🖋, all manner of papers📝 and notebooks (https://www.paperpoint.com.au).

We end up at South Melbourne Town Hall (13:51), which is a grand, Victorian style building with a clocktower. The water fountain immediately in front of it is a small war memorial with names of those who went to war and never came back. Surrounding it includes a police station and library, both built in the same period with equally grand architecture.
