Описание к видео James Thomson - (Bysshe Vanolis) - In the Train

.

James Thomson (1834-1882), also known by his pen name Bysshe Vanolis, was a British poet who was part of the Pre-Raphaelite literary movement. He was born in Port Glasgow, Scotland and attended the University of Glasgow, where he developed a lifelong friendship with fellow poet Arthur Hugh Clough.

Thomson's most famous work is perhaps a long poem titled "The City of Dreadful Night", which reflects his nihilistic views on life and society. It was published in 1874 and had a profound impact on other writers such as H.G. Wells and George Orwell.

"In the Train" is a much shorter poem that captures a moment of romantic longing and melancholy. It was first published in 1869 and describes a train journey through the Scottish countryside, during which the speaker reflects on lost loves and unfulfilled desires.

The poem's narrator is acutely aware of the passing scenery, but sees it as a backdrop to his own inner thoughts and emotions. He describes the landscapes as "a dream of perfect beauty...The hills and streams and woods and light, the glory that hath been, are yet..." but adds that "the heart of Beauty is the heart...and it is dead."

Thomson's poem reflects the Victorian obsession with nature as a source of comfort and inspiration, but also the darker themes of loss and mortality that run through much of his work. As with many of his contemporaries, such as Tennyson and Browning, Thomson was interested in the human psyche and explored the complexities of human emotion through his poetry.
