Republican Governor Greg Abott of Texas has promised to push a law that will ultimately ban sanctuary cities for illegal immigrants in the state.

Abbott made the statement due to growing concerns over the city of Austin, which has maintained its stance in continuing to serve as a sanctuary for immigrants illegally staying in the U.S. For the state of Texas, this has become a growing problem as other mayors from various cities expressed their support for Austin in harboring illegal immigrants.
Speaking on the matter, Abbott promised to solve Texas’ immigration crisis by moving to ban sanctuary cities.
“Yes. I’m going to sign a law that bans sanctuary cities,” he tweeted. “I’ve also already issued an order cutting funding to sanctuary cities.”
Following the election of incoming President Donald Trump, Abbott has emerged as only one of politicians looking to support the new leader in his stance against illegal immigrants.
Earlier this month, Republican Senator Charles Perry of Lubbock and San Angelo filed a bill to support the incoming administration’s immigration laws. If passed, the legislation will reprimand sanctuary cities that prohibit law enforcers from questioning, arresting or detaining immigrants due to their illegal status. If these cities fail to follow the law, they will lose state funding.
As noted by Perry, the bill reflects the country’s current political environment. By holding the majority role in the country’s leadership, the Republicans are now in the position to effectively address the growing immigration crisis, which has been linked to an increase in crime rate within cities.
“By electing a Republican president and Republican majorities in Congress, the American people made it clear that solving our illegal immigration crisis must be a priority,” Perry said according to My Statesman.
“That starts by eliminating sanctuary cities, securing our border and enforcing the immigration laws we currently have on the books,” he added.
