The recent ceasefire deal which has taken effect in Syria will help push forward the country's national reconciliation process, said the Syrian State Minister for National Reconciliation Affairs Ali Haidar on Wednesday.

Haidar said he welcomes the temporary truce, which was brokered by the United States and Russia, and took effect on Feb. 27.

He added that it is a crucial step to help bring an end to hostilities and finally achieve peace in Syria.

"For now, the end of hostilities has undoubtedly brought temporary quiet. It may lead to a true temporary ceasefire. And with the national reconciliation efforts we plan to make in many areas, lasting peace is possible. It will begin with the exchange of weapons for amnesty, and then, there is a chance to join the government forces," said Haidar.

The government of Syrian President Bashar Assad proposed the national reconciliation plan about three years ago in an effort to end the country's conflict. The Ministry of National Reconciliation Affairs was established in 2012.

Over the years, reconciliation has reportedly been reached in many areas in Damascus Countryside Governorate, Homs Governorate and Daraa Governorate.
"This isn't a new policy. It has been in place for three years, and tens of thousands of people have taken part in this process. They used to carry weapons, but after they laid down their weapons, they were granted amnesty and returned to normal lives. There are many examples. Some of them even joined the army," Haidar.

Assad reiterated recently that his administration remains committed to the national reconciliation process.
