I put a fish under the microscope.

Hands-on Biology today. We will be looking at the cells of a fish (trout) kidney. The cells will be stained with Methylene blue (Löffler's Solution) to make the nuclei of the cells visible. This is a simple wet-mount preparation, which demonstrates the appearance of unstained cells, stained cells and cells observed with phase contrast microscopy.

Some of you might wonder about the movement of the small particles in the specimen sample. This movement is due to Brownian Motion.

The kidney of a fish is used for osmoregulation (regulating water balance). The kidneys of mammals are also for excretion of nitrogen wastes. Fish excrete nitrogen waste in the form of ammonia over their gills, and not over the kidney.

Disclaimer: One of my kids dissected it in school during a Biology lesson and then brought it home. I ate it for dinner. The animal was therefore made good use of and was already "DOA" (dead on arrival).
