TV commercial for San Diego KTTY Channel 69's new TV show Beach Party, broadcast in August 1985 and promoting a program then airing weeknights at 5pm. The show featured dancing, comedy, and live music at Mariner's Point (looks like Joey Harris of the Beat Farmers in one shot). KTTY was new to San Diego at the time and making its mark with vintage cult shows like Dark Shadows, One Step Beyond, Outer Limits, the Invaders, the Fugitive, and other programming that was very uncommon in 1984. Like much later TV networks such as MEtv, channel 69 openly went after a hip Saturday Night Live generation.

The BetaGems channel has other KTTY programming and commercials, including "1985 Channel 69 Beach Party: KTTY San Diego TV series promo," "San Diego 1984 KTTY Channel 69 Newspot TV ad, horseback," "San Diego 1984 KTTY Channel 69 Newspot TV ad, escalator," "San Diego 1984 KTTY Channel 69 Take a Look Saloon TV ad," and "Studio 7 Oct. 1987 KTTY channel 69 San Diego intro." As the old channel promo song used to go, "Take a look at TV 69, take a loooooook!"

BetaGems are culled from an archive of over 1000 beta video tapes recorded from 1983 into the 1990s. Most feature live music performances broadcast on television in San Diego CA, though there are also rarely seen commercials, comedy clips, and other material that doesn't seem to be anywhere else on Youtube or online. Most of the tapes were recorded on a Sony SL-HFT7 Super Beta Theater Hi-Fi Stereo - the same model was refurbished and is being used for these digital transfers and uploads.

In rare occasions where a BetaGems clip does appear elsewhere, we're only uploading if our own beta master is better quality or contains material not seen previously. Much footage comes from public television and public access broadcasts that the taper, who worked for a local cable TV production company in the 1980s, monitored nightly for several years. Some of the programming is strictly regional, mostly from the San Diego area.
