Gander, a large Newfoundland dog, emerged as an unlikely hero during World War II, exemplifying courage and loyalty alongside the Canadian forces in the Battle of Hong Kong in December 1941. Initially named "Pal," Gander was a mascot of the Royal Rifles of Canada, who had taken him in after his original owner, unable to control his size and energy, donated him to the soldiers stationed at Gander, Newfoundland, from which he took his new name.
