"Air Varie" (Theme and Variations) is written by the French composer and violinist Charles Dancla (1817-1907). The composition consists of a theme, three variations, and coda.
It was customary for 19th-century violinists to take a well-known melody and compose variations on it. They were able to showcase their musicianship and violin virtuosity through the use of a familiar melody.
