Riverdale - "Chapter 1: The River's Edge" (1x01)

Inside Pop’s, Archie and Betty are talking about their summer experiences. Betty says that Tony Morrison told her “[time] goes by so fast at your age. One summer can change everything.” Archie nods knowingly and agrees with the statement. He tells her that working construction with his dad all summer was so boring that it made him internalize and begin writing poetry. Betty said that he does not even like reading poetry, and he reveals that the poems were actually songs which made him “feel like I’d finally broken through to something real.” This is a telling statement to us that songs, at least in this episode, will be internalizations of the characters they score. Betty is supportive and asks if he will get Miss Grundy to tutor him and if he will still play football. Archie says he is not sure about Miss Grundy, but he will try to juggle football and music, and that he is not telling anyone else but Betty about his songs. Betty brings up their friendship and we can only assume that she is going to suggest they move beyond friends, but her voice is drowned out by the song that has been playing lowly in the background all along. This scene is another indicator that all songs reflect internal thoughts. We zoom in on Archie as Betty’s voice begins to echo and die out while the music swells. The lyrics highlighted are from “No Surprise” by The Shacks. “You’ve always thought there was a change ahead” plays loudly as Archie is entranced by his first sighting of Veronica who has come to Pop’s to pick up food for her and her mother. This sets up the classic love triangle of Archie comics: Betty, Veronica, and Archie. We find out later Archie was having an affair with Miss Grundy over the summer. We also know that Betty is his best friend, but now based on what he just said about maybe not asking Miss Grundy for tutoring, and being enamored of the sight of Veronica, the soundtrack is telling us that he is looking for a change and at present wants to find it in Veronica, even though he knows nothing about her. Veronica engages Archie and Betty and we can tell Archie is acting out of character based on Betty’s reactions to his responses. Veronica asks if he knows who Truman Capote is, he does not respond and looks down, yet he still laughs a little too much at Veronica’s joke that Riverdale is In Cold Blood and she is Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Archie invites Veronica to join them and Betty gives him a disbelieving look that he never sees because his eyes are locked onto Veronica. Veronica declines and leaves after learning Betty will be showing her around the school tomorrow. Archie attempts to return to Betty’s previous conversation and she says it was nothing.
