Exploring the work of Sir Richard Doll (Epidemiology) through to Sir Richard Peto (Epidemiology), part of the MRC series to celebrate 100 years of life-changing discoveries.

In 1957, Sir Richard Doll was the first to prove that #smoking caused #lungcancer and increased the risk of #heartdisease. Doll's study of 400,000 doctors, completed in 1956, provided definitive evidence that smoking causes lung cancer. Due to the findings, Doll himself stopped smoking.

Professor Sir Richard Peto, Co-director of the Clinical trial service unit at the University of Oxford, started working on smoking with Richard Doll in the 1960s and was working with him on tobacco for more than 40 years.

The MRC became seriously involved in tobacco research in 1948 they set up a study showing that smoking was a cause of most of the lung cancer deaths and since lung cancer was killing more people than any other type of cancer in the country this was an important discovery. They carried on over the next few years, showing that smoking was causing cancer of the mouth and throat and heart disease.
