Yagi making a run for Category 5 Typhoon status

Typhoon Yagi has continued to intensify at a decent rate today, during a second rapid intensification phase. The storm is now pushing close to super typhoon status, and is likely to achieve it shortly as imagery continues to show improvement. The storm may reach Category 5 intensity later on Thursday, or on Friday as it approaches the coast of Hainan and the Leizhou peninsula of China. Very heavy rainfall is expected, along with fierce winds on Hainan and coastal parts of Guangdong province. Storm conditions could extend as far east as Hong Kong today, before subsiding tonight. The typhoon will continue along the coast into Vietnam on Friday and Saturday.

Elsewhere, there are now five areas of interest in the Atlantic, but none of them have a high chance of development. The best chance appears to stem from an area of interest in the main development region, which could become a weak to moderate tropical storm as it drifts northwards over open waters.

In the Eastern Pacific, an area of interest could develop into a tropical cyclone off the coast of Mexico next week.

In the Western Pacific, another area of interest is likely to develop near Micronesia, and could itself become a powerful typhoon next week as it nears the Mariana Islands.
