Plant into Aroid soil, a well-draining and airy potting mix specifically formulated for Monsteras.
Ues a pot with Drainage: This is non-negotiable for Thai Constellations. The pot must have drainage holes at the bottom. Standing water suffocates the roots, leading to root rot – a common and often fatal problem for these plants.
Water weekly when it is hot, fortnightly when it is not.
Hotter Months: Watering once a week but always check the soil moisture first.
Cooler Months: When temperatures drop and the plant's growth slows, its water requirements decrease significantly. Watering every two weeks or even less is fine. Again, check the soil rather than a strict schedule.
Feed monthly in summer and less in the cooler months! Use A balanced liquid NPK plant food
Neem oil is a natural insecticide and fungicide that can help protect your Thai Constellation from common pests like spider mites, mealybugs, and scale, as well as some fungal issues.
Use a spray bottle to spritz the plant, including the undersides of the leaves. Gently wipe the leaves with a soft cloth. This removes any dead pests, residue, and can prevent the neem oil from clogging the plant's pores or causing leaf burn, especially on the delicate variegated sections. The neem oil I use is non-comodegenic so it doesn't clog pores, but they aren't all created equal.
Neem oil can make the leaves more sensitive to sunlight, potentially causing sunburn or scorching. Keep it out of direct sunlight for at least 24-48 hours.
Thai Constellations need bright, indirect light to thrive and maintain their beautiful variegation.
Avoid direct sunlight, especially during the hottest parts of the day, can scorch the delicate variegated white and cream sections of the leaves, causing brown, crispy spots.
Leggy growth (long stems with few leaves), smaller leaves, and a loss of variegation can indicate insufficient light. Burnt or bleached spots on the leaves suggest too much direct sunlight.
Pop them on a trellis or pole so they grow up. Monsteras are natural climbers in their native habitat. Providing them with support encourages vertical growth.
Leaf Sheaths! Double-check that the sheath is brittle, brown, and feels completely dry to the touch. If there's any green or moisture left, it's still attached to the plant's processes, and you should leave it.
Avoid pulling or tearing: Never force the sheath. If it feels stuck, leave it. You could accidentally damage the stem or the base of the new leaf.
How to encourage more fenestration, those glorious splits and holes in your Monstera!
1. Provide Bright, Indirect Light
2. Allow Vertical Growth with Support
3. Maintain Consistent Watering Habits
4. Ensure Adequate Humidity
5. Provide Nutrients During the Growing Season
6. Be Patient - Maturity Takes Time
For all my Monsteras, and many other plants, I use an Aroid mix. If you’re in Australia, I highly recommend this one from the Plant Runner, you can use code PASSTHATPLANT to save 10%. https://theplantrunner.com/products/a...
Common Monstera Thai Constellation Issues
-Yellowing Leaves: This can indicate overwatering or poor drainage. Check the soil moisture and adjust your watering routine as needed.
-Brown Leaf Edges: Often a sign of low humidity or underwatering. Increase humidity and ensure the plant is watered regularly. I water mine weekly in summer and less during the cooler months.
-Loss of Variegation: This can happen if the plant isn’t getting enough light. Adjust the light conditions to encourage vibrant, healthy variegation.
