In May 1985, heavy fighting continued in and around Beirut during the Lebanese Civil War. The violence came as Lebanese President Amin Gemayel met Syrian President Hafez al-Assad in Damascus to discuss the deepening crisis. At the same time, Christian and Druze militias played a central role in the conflict, with shifting alliances adding to the instability. The events of this period reflected the complex mix of local, regional and international forces that shaped Lebanon’s long and brutal civil war.

The war continued for another five years before the Taif Agreement of 1990 finally brought an official end to the conflict.
