Transcript: Per InsideEVs, MG Motor is set to debut a new version of its MG4 electric hatchback in China on August 4, and it’s making headlines for being the first affordable compact EV to feature a semi-solid-state battery. Priced at just $16,500, this MG4 offers an estimated 333 miles of range on China’s CLTC test cycle—far more than the similarly priced BYD Seagull.

The semi-solid battery technology, supplied by QingTao Energy, uses only 5% liquid electrolyte and is engineered for better cold-weather performance and safety. It has a 70-kWh capacity and maintains its range even in frigid conditions as low as 19°F. Though its energy density sits lower than Tesla’s, the focus here is on safety and affordability rather than record-breaking specs.

This marks a turning point in battery tech going mainstream—not just reserved for high-performance or luxury vehicles. And while U.S. automakers like Stellantis, BMW, and Mercedes are also experimenting with solid-state batteries, MG is showing that this tech can soon reach everyday drivers—just not in North America yet.
