Use of letters in Algebra: Why all the letters?
Letters of the alphabets make it easier for us to represent unknown objects or figures which could have been cumbersome. Imagine if you have to draw a watermelon or a goat or an elephants each time you have to represent them in a mathematical expression.
• We use letters because the value is unknown e.g.
i. What number is 2 times as big as 20?
ii. What number is four times as big as x?
• We use letters to express relationships
A student has 2 pencils, if someone borrows 1 pencil, how many will she have left? If someone then gives her some pencils, how many does she have now?
