Port Royal is looking for a new chief of police after being notified by Alan Beach that he plans to retire this fall after a 37-year career with the department including the last 12 years as chief. The search comes as the town grapples with population-fueled development that’s pressuring town services including police.
The town has received more than 30 applications for the chief’s position, Town Manager Van Willis said, adding, “We have some really, really, really good candidates.” The deadline to apply was Tuesday. Willis updated Town Council members on the police chief search during a July 10 meeting. Interviews will be conducted in August and the finalists will then be introduced to the public.

Those hoping for relief this winter from the South Carolina drought may be disappointed because of La Niña, the latest forecast shows. The National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center recently issued an updated forecast for La Niña, shifting the chances of the weather pattern forming more toward the fall from previous predictions for the summer. The formation of a La Niña can contribute to drier winters and more severe Atlantic hurricane seasons.

According to the latest forecast, there is a 70% chance of La Niña emerging between August and October. There is also a 79% chance that La Niña will persist during November through January. The Atlantic hurricane season started June 1 and lasts through November.

It's almost that time of year again to shop until you drop.

South Carolina's annual tax-free weekend is coming up, and with it comes a selection of sweet deals. This year, the event is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 2 to Sunday, Aug. 4.

Last year, S.C. shoppers purchased over $30.4 million in tax-free items during the tax-free weekend, according to a news release from the SC Department of Revenue (SCDOR).

"As inflation continues to drain many wallets, this year's Tax-Free Weekend offers some relief for weary families," SCDOR Director Hartley Powell said in a press release. “Every shopper saves money during this tax holiday, particularly on back-to-school essentials."
There are a variety of items that may be eligible for purchase without paying the state's 6% sales tax and any applicable local taxes. Some of these items include clothing, computers, school supplies, and other back to school essentials. Other eligible items listed by the SCDOR are bed and bath items, diapers, earbuds, headphones, printers, purses, and shoes.
