Our first video release! This female tokoeka (Stewart Is. kiwi) was spotted en route to one of our study sites at Mason Bay, on the Masons - Freshwater track, Feb 2019. Kiwi use their long bills to probe the soil and leaf litter for invertebrates, including earthworms, grubs & beetles, and berries, leaves & seeds! They have sensory pits at the tip of the bill that allows them to sense and target prey moving underground. If you listen carefully when you're in the bush, you may hear the snuffling & snorting of a kiwi clearing it's nostrils of dirt.
