We stepped onto the bustling platform at Tokyo Station, anticipation buzzing in the air. Before us lay the sleek, silver bullet trains of the Tokaido Shinkansen—an icon of Japanese high-speed travel. Our destination: Shin-Osaka.

Covering approximately 515 km or 320 miles, this journey usually takes an astonishing 2 hours 20 to 30 minutes on the fastest Nozomi service, reaching speeds up to 300 km/h.

We had booked our tickets through Klook, opting for the Nozomi with reserved seats—expecting smooth sailing. We paid around ¥14,720 for the reserved seat. Heads-up: some travelers mention that Klook can add extra fees or limit seat choice, so if you want complete flexibility, booking directly via JR or SmartEX might be a better option.

Our train arrived with a hush and glided away. Inside, plush seats, power outlets, and panoramic windows set the stage for comfort and speed. As the countryside blurred outside, we passed major stops—Shinagawa, Shin-Yokohama, Nagoya, Kyoto—before arriving in Shin-Osaka in just two and a half hours.

For those using the Japan Rail Pass, note that the speedy Nozomi isn’t included without a supplement. Most JR Pass travelers use the Hikari or Kodama services instead:

Hikari: around 3 hours, covered by JR Pass
Kodama: around 4 hours, stops at every station, also covered by JR Pass

Ticket prices stay fairly consistent across these services: ¥13,870 for non-reserved, ¥14,720 for reserved, and around ¥19,590 for Green Car (first class) during the regular season.
