In DRC, mpox has been on the rise in several parts of the country for the past decade. In recent months, a virus mutation discovered in South Kivu is now being transmitted through close human-to-human contact with an infected person versus the typical way of close contact with an infected animal. Cases are especially concerning in densely populated areas, including camps for displaced people around Goma in North Kivu.
