You're scrolling too much. You know you are.
It's not just the time wasted: scrolling is frying your brain.

And if you're a child whose brain is still forming, the internet is literally shaping the way your brain works and seriously destroying your capacity to absorb and retain information, or to relate facts.

We know all of this, yet feel powerless to stop it. For one thing, the dopamine hits from social media are, quite literally, addictive. And designed to be. (No need for a conspiracy theory: a standard business model is enough. If you make your money from advertising ... and adverts need eyeballs ... then it follows that maximising customer usage is the route to profit. And if your company doesn't stoop to that, it will be beaten out by rivals who will.)

Back in 1985, Neil Postman's bestseller "Amusing Ourselves to Death" bewailed the trivialising effect of TV on public discussion, and dissected, piece by piece, how and why that was inevitable. The process was intrinsic to the medium.

And the internet has supercharged that effect.
And social media have supercharged that.
And smartphones have supercharged social media.
