Join me on an insightful UK Muslim vlog as I investigate Dewsbury and Savile Town, an area in the UK known for its significant 99% Muslim population. This journey aims to uncover the reality of life in this unique British community, moving beyond headlines to share an authentic story.
My day started with a travel mishap, landing me in Huddersfield instead of Dewsbury, which put me behind schedule for my Friday exploration. Arriving late, I found Dewsbury surprisingly quiet. My first stop was the town’s market, which I’d heard was a hub for Islamic clothing and fresh produce. The reality was different; it felt aged and was very empty. Sellers offered random car boot-style items, a stark contrast to the bustling, thriving market I had imagined. It was a moment of reflection on how much the area had changed.

Exploring further, I saw signs of economic struggle, like a closed-down halal butcher and other shuttered shops. A local man I spoke to shared his disappointment, calling the town “rundown.” Despite this, I found traces of a rich Islamic heritage, including an old, closed Islamic school. The town centre itself had beautiful architecture but felt deserted, with many storefronts replaced by betting shops.
The journey then led me to Savile Town, the heart of the 99% Muslim community. I was immediately impressed by how beautiful and clean the streets were, challenging the unfair stereotypes often associated with Muslim areas. It was inspiring to see residents’ entrepreneurial spirit, with many turning parts of their homes into small businesses and takeaways.
As the call to prayer for Jummah began, I witnessed the beautiful sight of the community heading to the local mosques. The air was filled with a sense of devotion. I passed several Islamic shops selling thobes and perfumes (attar), where I stopped to buy a few scents. My main goal was to visit the Markazi Mosque (Tablighi Markaz), one of Europe’s largest mosques. Its scale was truly impressive. Respecting the “no filming” signs, I went inside to pray Jummah, and the emotional recitation made for a deeply moving spiritual experience.
Afterward, I visited the smaller Masjid Umar, a humble but immaculately clean and beautiful mosque with a serene atmosphere. I also had the pleasure of meeting a subscriber, who described Savile Town as a peaceful place to live because of the strong Muslim community, though he noted a lack of activities. My day also included a moment of charity (Zakat) when I bought food for a woman in need, a humbling reminder of Islamic values.
For food, a local recommended “Pit Stop,” where I ordered the “Lewis Burger,” a delicious 10/10 Wagyu steak burger. Enjoying my meal in a park, I felt a real appreciation for the area, which contrasted with the negative views I’d heard. My day concluded with a strange encounter where a man shouted at me for taking a picture of a mosque from a public street, a confusing end to an otherwise enlightening trip.
This vlog is my honest look at a complex British Muslim community—a story of faith, resilience, and daily life.
