The IRS and Treasury have announced several new tools related to the Child Tax Credit. Recall, the American Rescue Plan increased the dollar amount of the Child Tax Credit for 2021 and allowed for Advance Payments – monthly checks – starting July 15. Some individuals may not want to receive checks, however, preferring to wait to claim the credit at tax time. A new tool from the IRS - the “Child Tax Credit Update Portal” will help someone to unenroll or “opt out” of the monthly checks. We explain this new tool, how it fits into the family of tools from the IRS, how to use the tool, and future uses for the tool in the weeks ahead.
Update: On June 30 the IRS announced this Update Portal can now also be used to quickly and easily update bank account information.
