As the wind brushes against the cliffs, I set foot on the trails that have challenged explorers for centuries, ready to uncover the tales hidden in the heart of the Drakensberg.

This peak, standing at 3,248 meters, is one of the highest in the Drakensberg range. It was named after an early climbing expedition where a bottle of champagne was accidentally shattered in celebration. The Gray’s Pass route, first climbed in 1861, became an official path in 1888, thanks to the Stocker Brothers. Over the years, climbers have tackled its rugged terrain, with some legendary ascents, including George Thompson’s daring climb despite a broken ankle.
Monks Cowl
Nestled between Champagne Castle and Cathkin Peak, Monks Cowl is a striking, free-standing rock formation resembling a hooded monk , its beauty as "cold and fascinating." Local legends tell of storms and supernatural forces seemingly guarding the peak.
