Aperture is the size of the opening in your lens that allows light to pass through. It's measured in f-stops. Lower apertures, also known as wide apertures, will open up the lens to let more light into the sensor, making the image brighter and making the depth of field shallower(shallow depth of field- the subject is in focus while the background is blurry). Higher apertures, also known as narrow apertures, close the lens, allowing less light to get to the sensor and also make a deep depth of field(deep depth of field-keeping everything from the foreground to the background in sharp focus). A good reference to conceptualize this concept is comparing it to the human eye. When it is dark, your eyes dilate your pupils, making them larger to get more light in during the day, when it's bright, your pupils become small, allowing much less light in.
