Red-shouldered Hawks are easily recognized by their striking rusty-red shoulders and a barred, reddish-brown chest. Their broad, rounded wings show a distinctive crescent-shaped patch of light near the tips in flight. They are found in two main populations: one across eastern North America, and a separate, smaller population along the Pacific Coast, including California. The Red-shouldered Hawk has a distinctive, piercing 'kee-aah' call that sounds a bit like a harsh scream. It's often one of the most recognizable sounds in eastern and western forests. Red-shouldered Hawks are highly territorial, especially around their nesting sites. They'll actively defend their space from other raptors and potential threats. Despite their loud calls, these hawks can be surprisingly stealthy hunters, perching patiently before swooping down to grab small mammals, reptiles or amphibians.
