Casio PX-S3100 Overview
The PX-S3100 is one the lightest and slimmest 88-note weighted action digital pianos around at a mere 25 lbs, and also offers battery operation for maximum portability. Where it differs from the PX-S1100 is the fact that the S3100 is aimed at performers looking for a gigging instrument with extra functionality.

Casio PX-S3100 Sound
The main grand piano sample on the S3100 is actually the same core Hamburg sample from Casio’s GP series, though it is a slightly downgraded version. Still, this is a very dynamic piano tone with a broad range of timbres available courtesy of the Multi-Dimensional Morphing AiR Sound Source with 192-note polyphony.

There’s also a good amount of editability with the built-in Acoustic Simulator, and we’d recommend accessing that via Casio’s Music Space app, though it is built-in as well.

The sound is being delivered via a dual speaker system with 16 watts of power, and Casio has upgraded the speaker design from the previous generation S3000. Considering how light the S3100 is, these speakers are really impressive and pack a solid punch.

There’s a pair of controllable knobs for added real-time control, as well as a pitch bend wheel.

Roland FP30X Overview
The FP30X was the follow-up to the popular FP30, and despite how good the FP30 already was, Roland managed to make sweeping improvements with the FP30X, including a new sound chip, increased polyphony, added Bluetooth Audio and added ¼” line outputs.

The FP30X is widely regarded as one of if not the top models in the class.

Roland FP30X Sound
The FP30X is using Roland’s SuperNATURAL Piano Sound, and while there are many fewer built-in sounds with 56, these are all core sounds and the GM2 bank is accessible via the Roland Piano App anyway, and this really expands the FP30X’s overall functionality.

The default grand piano tone is also very dynamic here - the addition of the new BMC sound chip makes a huge difference over what the FP30 offered.

Like on the S3100, you can dive pretty deeply here via Roland’s Piano Designer and customize the sound to your own liking.

The FP30X doesn’t really offer anything in the way of real-time control, so while it can be a great gigging instrument, it’s aimed at folks who mostly just need piano, e piano and organ sounds.

Comparing the Piano Actions
The S3100 is equipped with Casio’s Smart Scaled Hammer Action Keyboard. For folks without a ton of acoustic piano experience, this is going to be a fine action. For those used to acoustic pianos, this action won’t feel as realistic as the FP30X’s PHA4.

The PHA4 action on the FP30X is definitely more advanced and closer to a real piano with a longer pivot length, triple sensor and escapement. The trade-off here of course is that the FP30X weighs more than the S3100.
