Ferocious Tenderness is track 3 from the album Mina by Geoff Smith.

This video features the notation for Ferocious Tenderness. Ferocious Tenderness was composed & performed on Smith’s ‘Fluid Dulcimer’. This hammered dulcimer was invented by Smith and was the precursor to his invention of the ‘Fluid Piano’.
The notation consists of 17 pages. The 17 pages are presented as a slide show in the video so that you can follow the notation whilst listening to Ferocious Tenderness.

The ‘Fluid Dulcimer’ incorporates adjustable microtonal tuning (Fluid Tuning) on individual notes. The instrument has a range of four and a half octaves and incorporates ‘Fluid Tuning’ mechanisms on forty seven notes.

Ferocious Tenderness proved to be a seminal composition for Smith as a unique innovator and pioneer in composition, technique and performance on the Hammered Dulcimer. This is because of the following combination of factors which made the creation of Ferocious Tenderness possible:

(1) The use of a full spectrum of percussion and drum rudiments including controlled bounce, in composition and performance on the Hammered Dulcimer, that are not used by other players from whichever culture. Smith is the only musician in the world to have explored, in both composition and performance, a comprehensive spectrum of percussion and drum rudiments on the Hammered Dulcimer.
(2) The use of the ‘Fluid Tuning’ mechanisms to create a particular microtonal tuning that is specific to Ferocious Tenderness.
(3) The physical structure of the Fluid Dulcimer overall, in combination with its integral ‘Fluid Tuning’, facilitates the exploration of a significantly wider dynamic range in performance technique, in order to realise and fully achieve the character of the composition.
(4) Ferocious Tenderness can only be played in a standing position because of the techniques and dynamics that are required for its performance.
(5) The ergonomic design of the particular hammers that Smith uses. These are crucial in facilitating his technique has been the use of a different design of hammers as well as method of gripping the hammers: i.e. the way in which the hammers are actually held in each hand and manoeuvred within each hand during performance. These hammers facilitate the exploration of the complete spectrum of percussion and drum rudiments so that composition and performance can be fully explored, in contrast to composition and performance being restricted to more limited parameters.
