“Last night my aunt had an incident where ICE came to her house at 2:30 in the morning and pounding on her door looking for the previous tenants that live there and uh so that really upset me like we as Indian people not only have to carry our ID, a driver's license, a birth certificate and our tribal ID just to say that we belong here you know and so that really upset me as not just the Lawrence community member as a Native American and as a U.S. citizen.”

STORYLINE:
After videos of ICE arrests and operations were shared on social media, students with Haskell Indian Nations University organized a demonstration against immigration enforcement activities in Kansas on Friday.

A few hundred community members lined up along Massachusetts Street Lawrence, Kansas to hold up signs, chant and cheer on passing cars that honked to the crowd.

“Lawrence is a very, I mean we're a blue dot in a red state so you kind of expect it to a bit of a greater extent but it's really good to come out here and be with people who you know are also concerned for their community and want to show out for them,” Micah Lantz, a Lawrence resident said.

Tweesna Rose Mills, a Native American and Lawrence resident, said she attended the protest after ICE showed up at her aunt’s home early Friday morning.

“Last night my aunt had an incident where ICE came to her house at 2:30 in the morning and pounding on her door looking for the previous tenants that live there and so that really upset me like we as Indian people not only have to carry our ID, a driver's license, a birth certificate and our tribal ID just to say that we belong here you know and so that really upset me as not just the Lawrence community member as a Native American and as a U.S. citizen,” Mills said.

Some local businesses in Lawrence have hung up signs in their store fronts that prohibit full face mask with others saying “everyone is welcome here except ICE.”
