The O-lay method can be used at very shallow water depths using a tractor as installation vehicle instead of a lay barge.

Because the method doesn't have an extensive traffic of pipes to the installation zone a small tracked vehicle can install the pipe. This specially prepared installation vehicle has an adjustable ground pressure due to inflatable (and therefore adjustable) floaters that are mounted below the vehicle.

The pipe can be trenched directly after the pipe is laid on the bottom. For some projects, when the pipe has to be buried at a greater depth (due to ice gouging), an first trencher can run upfront to pre-trench the route so that the second trencher (post trencher) has a less heavy/complicated task to fulfill.
Specially in area's where ice gouging can be a problem (like the Caspian Sea) the pipe needs to be buried often in more than 4 meter.
