Two unique recipes of Balakai Palya or Raw Banana Fry go well with Rice or Chapati. Can accompany the Rice Sambar combo as well. Narrated in Kannada.


There are varieties of ways to prepare Balakai Palya or Raw banana Sabzi. I present here two different types of Palya recipes that you probably won't find elsewhere. This is tasty Palya/Sabzi made out of Balakai or Raw Banana that you will relish. If you like Potato Palya or Fry, you will love these two varieties of Palya as well. It is my kid's favorite palya/fry. Easy to make, it takes just a few minutes of your time to prepare this. Do give it a try and let me know your thoughts.

Ingredients:

Raw Banana - 1
Onion - 1 Chopped
Oil - 1 Tbsp
Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp
Urad Dal - 1 tsp
Curry Leaves - 6-8
Slit Green Chillies - 2
Grated Coconut - 2-3 Tbsp
Salt
Coriander Leaves - 1-2 Tbsp

Method:

1. Peel the outer covering of the Raw Banana and chop them into small pieces and transfer them to a bowl of water.

2. Add 1 Tbsp Oil to a pan.

3. Once Oil is hot, add 1 tsp Mustard Seeds.

4. Once Mustard Seeds splutter, add 1 tsp Urad Dal.

5. Add 6-8 Curry Leaves.

6. Add 2 slit Green Chillies.

7. Fry the ingredients in Oil just a little bit.

8. Add finely chopped 1 big-sized Onion. Add 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder.

9. Fry till the Onion pieces turn soft.

10. Now add the chopped Raw Banana to the pan.

11. Sprinkle little water at a time and mix well.

12. Close the lid and cook in medium flame for 5 minutes.

13. Open the lid and sprinkle water. Fry and close the lid and allow to cook.

14. Cook till the Balekai/Raw Banana pieces turn soft.

15. Once completely cooked, add Salt as per taste.

16. Add 3 Tbsp grated Coconut and mix well.

17. Add finely chopped Coriander Leaves and mix well.

Now Onion based Balekai/Raw Banana Palya/Fry is ready.

Balekai Palya Recipe - 2

Ingredients:

Raw Banana - 1
Oil - 1 Tbsp
Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp
Cumin Seeds - 1-2 tsp
Hing/Asafoetida - 2 pinches
Curry Leaves - 6-8
Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tsp
Salt
Red Chilli Powder - 1-2 tsp
Coriander Leaves - 1-2 Tbsp

Method:

1. Add 1 Tbsp Oil to a pan.

2. Once Oil is hot, add 1 tsp Mustard Seeds.

3. Once Mustard Seeds splutter, add 1-2 tsp Cumin Seeds. Add 2 pinches of Hing/Asafoetida.

4. Add 6-8 Curry Leaves.

5. Once Curry Leaves are fried, add finely chopped Raw Banana/plantain pieces kept in water.

6. Add 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder and mix once.

7. Now sprinkle water a little at a time, close the lid and allow the Raw Banana to cook.

8. Open the lid in intervals and add little water, mix and then close the lid till it is cooked completely.

9. Once the Balekai/Raw Banana completely cooked, add Salt as per taste. Also, add 1-2 tsp Red Chilli Powder for spice and mix well.

10. Finally, add 1-2 Tbsp of Coriander Leaves and mix well.
